EURO 2020: Home advantage? England and 8 others host games

Fifty-five years after playing six straight matches at Wembley Stadium to win the 1966 World Cup, England could play another six at the famous venue at this year's European Championship. Nine of the 24 teams at the postponed tournament will host matches, but no city has more games on the schedule than London. England's three Group D matches will be played at Wembley, and they could stay in town for the round of 16 if they finish at the top. From there, the team could head to Rome for the quarterfinals and then possibly back to Wembley for the semifinals and final. By then, authorities will be hoping to fill more than a quarter of the 90,000 seats if the coronavirus situation improves. Five other teams will also play all their group games at home, including three-time champions Germany and Spain in Munich and Seville, respectively. Also, Italy will play its group matches in Rome, the Netherlands will stay in Amsterdam and Denmark will host its matches in Copenhagen. Those games ...

China’s ruling Communist Party eases birth limits, allows couples to have 3 children

Image Source : AP China’s ruling Communist Party eases birth limits, allows couples to have 3 children China’s ruling Communist Party said Monday it will ease birth limits to allow all couples to have three children instead of two in hopes of slowing the rapid aging of its population, which is adding to strains on the economy and society. The ruling party has enforced birth limits since 1980 to restrain population growth but worries the number of working-age people is falling too fast while the share over age 65 is rising. That threatens to disrupt its ambitions to transform China into a prosperous consumer society and global technology leader. A ruling party meeting led by President Xi Jinping decided to introduce “measures to actively deal with the aging population,” the official Xinhua News Agency said. It said leaders agreed ”implementing the policy of one couple can have three children and supporting measures are conducive to improving China...

Treasure hunt for miniature artworks on New York's streets grip art lovers

[ad_1] Filmmaker Zack Obid trembles with excitement: he has just found a miniature work of art during a treasure hunt that an American artist organises every week in his Brooklyn neighbourhood. Steve Wasterval estimates that in the last three years he has painted and hidden about 80 tiny landscape drawings of Greenpoint, an area with a large Polish community seen as increasingly hip in recent times with young creatives moving in. "I really wanted to give my art away. I wanted to put it up on walls and out in the street," says Wasterval, 40, at his studio inside a former Faber Castell pencil factory. "I remember thinking they should be tiny paintings so I can hide them and people can find them and I can find as many as I want," he adds. Typically, every weekend at an unspecified time, Wasterval publishes on his Instagram account a photo of a landscape in front of the spot that inspired the work, always in Greenpoint. Within minutes, a dozen people arrive at the scene...

iphone 7: How Apple FaceTime helped cops catch iPhone thieves - Times of India

[ad_1] Two thieves decided to mug two teenagers near the Highworth Co-op store in London and steal their valuable belongings. They succeeded, landing themselves a haul of an iPhone 7 and a wallet that had 75 pounds, as per a report by Swindon Advertiser. Then, instead of fleeing and laying low and doing things you would expect a thief to do, they went to a restaurant and filmed their dinner over FaceTime with the stolen iPhone, without doing anything to the stolen iPhone, like resetting or disabling any function. The thieves had actually driven off after stealing the iPhone but the license plate number of the car they drove off in was memorised by the victim who told it to the police. The thieves didn’t bother changing the car or any means to disguise their vehicle, a Vauxhall Corsa. Some hours later, the thieves were caught, with the FaceTime call record on iPhone serving as the incriminatory evidence against the two, one of whom has been identified as Kairo Theophilus-Reid. We continue to be strictly guided by principles of transparency, a commitment to empowering every voice on the service, and protecting freedom of expression and privacy under the Indian law," a Twitter Spokesperson said in a fresh statement tod...

According to the World Health Organisation, lung cancer was the most common cause of cancer deaths in 2020. The most significant risk factor for lung cancer is cigarette smoking. GHI | Universal Images Group | Getty Images A century ago this week, the wealthiest U.S. Black community was burned to the ground. At the turn of the 20th century, the Greenwood District of Tulsa, Oklahoma, became one of the first communities in the country thriving with Black entrepreneurial businesses. The prosperous town, founded by many descendants of slaves, earned a reputation as the Black Wall Street of America and became a harbor for African Americans in a highly segregated city under Jim Crow laws. On May 31, 1921, a white mob turned Greenwood upside down in one of the worst racial massacres in U.S. history. In the matter of hours, 35 square blocks of the vibrant Black community were turned into smoldering ashes. Countless Black people were killed — estimates ranged from 55 to more than 300 — and 1,000 homes and...

A vaccine side effect leaves women wondering: why isn’t the pill safer?

Image
[ad_1] Written by Apoorva Mandavilli In April, as the Food and Drug Administration paused use of Johnson & Johnson’s COVID-19 vaccine to evaluate the risk of blood clots in women younger than 50, many scientists noted that clots associated with birth control pills were much more common. The comparison was intended to reassure women of the vaccine’s safety. Instead, it has stoked anger in some quarters — not about the pause, but about the fact that most contraceptives available to women are hundreds of times riskier, and yet safer alternatives are not in sight. The clots linked to the vaccine were a dangerous type in the brain, while birth control pills increase the chances of a blood clot in the leg or lung — a point quickly noted by many experts. But the distinction made little difference to some women. “Where was everyone’s concern for blood clots when we started putting 14-year-old girls on the pill,” one woman wrote on Twi...

Smokers at Greater Risk of Dying from COVID-19

Image
GENEVA - In marking World No-Tobacco Day, the World Health Organization is urging smokers to quit their habit, warning they are at higher risk of dying from COVID-19 than non-smokers. Head of WHO's Tobacco Control Program, Vinayak Prasad tells VOA a plethora of scientific studies over the past year confirm smokers face a 50% higher risk of developing severe disease and death from COVID-19. "It is logical because smoking does compromise on the lung functions and this virus does attack the lungs. So, that is where we see the rational for taking measures to not use tobacco," he said. The World Health Organization is urging smokers to join its year-long quit tobacco campaign, which helps countries scale-up their tobacco-control services. These include running national awareness campaigns, opening new cessation clinics, and offering nicotine replacement therapies. Prasad says it is of utmost importance to make users aware of the risks they run. He says some eight million peopl...
